How Much Does a Small Kitchen Remodel Cost in Los Angeles?
Most published small-kitchen numbers for Los Angeles are estimates working back from a per-square-foot rate. We cannot tell you what a small kitchen costs from our own records, because we log what a job finished at and not how many square feet it was — so here is the honest version instead: of the 22 kitchens we have finished and closed out in LA, 11 came in under $50k, 5 came in at or under $40k, and the cheapest was $23k. Those are final prices at close-out. What decides which end you land on is whether the layout moves, far more than how big the room is.
What our cheapest completed LA kitchens actually cost
The five lowest final prices in our own records are $23k, $34k, $38k, $40k, $40k. Half of all 22 kitchens we have completed came in under $50k. We do not record room sizes, so we are not claiming those five were the smallest rooms — we are showing you the bottom of a real distribution rather than an estimate of one.
That is worth saying plainly because most published small-kitchen numbers are estimates working backwards from a per-square-foot rate. A small kitchen is not a cheap kitchen scaled down — the same sink, the same appliances and the same inspections are involved whether the room is 70 square feet or 200. Floor area is one of the weaker predictors of the final number.
What actually decides it is whether the layout moves. Keep the sink, the range and the fridge roughly where they are and a small kitchen stays at the bottom of the range. Move the plumbing to the other wall and you are paying for that regardless of how small the room is.
What a small kitchen budget buys at each level
The three tiers below are the ones we actually see, described by what is and is not touched rather than by finish adjectives.

Where a small kitchen quietly gets expensive
The wall you open. Small kitchens are often small because a wall is in the way, and taking it out is where a modest budget stops being modest. If it carries load, engineering and a beam follow.
What is behind the plaster. On a pre-1970 Los Angeles house, opening a kitchen wall regularly finds wiring that will not pass inspection or galvanised pipe that has to be replaced before it will pass. That is not an upsell; it is the price of the permit.
Appliance choices that do not scale down. A small kitchen with a full premium appliance package can cost more than a large kitchen with sensible ones. Appliances do not get cheaper because the room is smaller.
Custom cabinetry to fit an awkward room. The smaller and stranger the room, the more likely stock sizes will not work, and custom boxes are where a small kitchen can quietly overtake a big one.
How to keep a small kitchen at the bottom of the range
Leave the plumbing where it is. That single decision separates the bottom of our range from the middle of it more reliably than any material choice.
Reface rather than replace if the cabinet boxes are sound. On a small kitchen the boxes are a large share of the cabinetry line, and sound boxes in a small room are common.
Choose one thing to spend on. A small room shows a single good surface better than a big one does, so one slab counter or one proper piece of lighting carries further here than it would in a large kitchen.
Hold a contingency anyway. We hold one on every job and say so upfront, because the wall is the wall whatever the room measures.

Is a small kitchen remodel cheaper per square foot? +
Usually the opposite. The fixed costs — the sink, the appliances, the permit, the inspections, the tradespeople turning up — are much the same whatever the room measures, so they are spread across fewer square feet. We do not quote per square foot for that reason; it flatters big rooms and misleads on small ones.
What is the cheapest real kitchen you have completed in LA? +
$23k, and it is in the project database we publish. That was a refresh where the layout did not move. It is a real final price at close-out, not a starting-from figure.
Can I do a small kitchen without a permit? +
If nothing is touching plumbing, gas, electrical or structure — a straight cosmetic swap — often not. The moment a sink moves, a circuit is added or a wall is opened, you are in permit territory. Unpermitted kitchen work is one of the more common things we are called in to remediate, and it is far more expensive to fix afterwards than to do properly.
How long does a small kitchen remodel take? +
A refresh that leaves the layout alone typically runs 4-7 weeks on site. Replace-in-place is more like 7-11 weeks. Once plumbing moves or a wall comes out you are into design, permitting and inspection, and the door-to-door figure is months rather than weeks.
Is it worth remodelling a small kitchen at all? +
On resale a kitchen that works well tends to matter more than a kitchen that is large. A small kitchen with a sensible layout, sound services and a good work triangle shows better than a bigger one with an awkward plan. The projects of ours that got the best reaction were rarely the most expensive.
