Pasadena bathrooms are small on purpose. The houses were planned when one bathroom served a family and a second was a luxury, so the usual brief is not "make it beautiful" but "find the space" — and the space, in a period house on a generous lot, is almost always there once somebody is willing to redraw the landing, the closet and the back bedroom together instead of one at a time.

Bathrooms inside period houses
The room is small because the plan is old
Borrowing from an adjacent closet or a corridor is the standard move and it is usually the right one. What matters is doing it once, on a drawing that considers the whole upstairs, rather than discovering halfway through that the door now opens into the bath.
Period tile, and when to keep it
Some of the original tilework in this city is genuinely good and worth saving; a great deal of it is 1970s and worth nothing. Telling the difference before demolition day is a five-minute conversation that occasionally saves the best thing in the room.
Waterproofing an old house properly
A bathroom is the one room where a hundred-year-old subfloor and modern water use meet. We open it, look, and specify the substrate and the waterproofing for what is actually under the tile — which is the difference between a bathroom that lasts twenty years and one that quietly ruins the ceiling below it.
