A house of this era typically had one, placed off a hallway, and the question every owner eventually faces is whether to restore it, enlarge it, or add another. All three are legitimate. The answer depends on how much original fabric survives and on what the household actually needs, and it should be decided before the first tile is ordered.

Small period bathrooms, done well
Restore, enlarge, or add — decide first
A surviving period bath with intact tile and fittings is worth keeping and repairing. A previously butchered one is a free hand. And where a household needs a second bathroom, finding room for a new one is frequently a better use of money than stretching the old one into an awkward shape.
Waterproofing behind old walls
Period construction had no concept of modern waterproofing, and mortar-bed showers of the era fail slowly and invisibly. Rebuilding to current standards behind the visible finish is the non-negotiable part of the work, whatever style the finished room is going to wear.
Fitting a modern bath into a period footprint
These rooms are small and their proportions are part of their charm. The design skill is in choosing fixtures scaled to the space, using the full height of the walls for storage, and resisting the urge to fill a compact room with oversized modern pieces that make it feel smaller.
Filing through the city portal
All plan-check, building and zoning applications go through the city's Accela online portal, whether filed by a contractor or a homeowner. Straight refits move quickly; work that moves plumbing or alters structure earns a proper set of drawings.
Salvaging the tile that deserves it
Period bathrooms in these houses sometimes carry original tile worth more than anything that could replace it: hand-glazed field tiles, a decorative border, a fireplace-quality colour that is simply not made now. Where enough survives, careful removal, cleaning and reinstatement — or retaining a section and designing the new work around it — produces a room with a depth that no reproduction achieves. It takes patience and a tiler willing to work slowly, and it is not always possible. But the decision to look properly before demolition, rather than to clear the room and regret it afterwards, costs nothing and occasionally saves something irreplaceable.
