Restraint in a room with a view
Where the window is doing the work, the interior should be doing less. Fewer materials, a controlled palette and considered sightlines produce rooms that feel expansive; busy schemes in the same rooms simply compete with the horizon and lose.
Improving seventies bones rather than hiding them
Exposed beams, angled ceilings and generous glazed openings are common in this stock and are genuine assets when treated with confidence. The design work is deciding which era features to celebrate and which to quietly resolve, then being consistent about it.
Indoor and outdoor as one plan
In this climate the terrace, deck or patio is a room the household uses most of the year. Designing continuity of floor material, colour and lighting between inside and out makes both spaces larger, and it is the highest-value move available in a coastal house.
