Interior design in a Sierra Madre bungalow is a negotiation with a house that already has strong opinions. Dark stained timber, built-in cabinetry, picture rails, leaded glass and low horizontal proportions are not a background — they are the design, and they were good. The work is to make a hundred-year-old interior comfortable for a modern household without either fighting the architecture or reproducing a period room nobody actually wants to live in.

Living inside a Craftsman house
Working with dark timber instead of against it
Original stained woodwork is the most divisive element in these houses. Rather than the usual binary of painting it all or preserving it all, the better schemes decide room by room, using wall colour, textiles and lighting to let the timber read as warm rather than heavy.
Lighting a house built before good lighting
These interiors were designed around daylight and a single overhead fixture. A properly layered modern lighting scheme — worked into existing ceilings and walls with care for the plaster — changes how the whole house feels after dark more than any other intervention.
Built-ins as the house intended
Craftsman planning put storage into the architecture: window seats, sideboards, bookcases flanking a fireplace. Extending that logic with new built-ins, made to the house's proportions, adds storage without adding furniture and is the most authentic move available.
A palette drawn from the foothills
The town sits against the mountains and the light comes in low and warm through mature trees. Colours pulled from that setting — earth, foliage, stone — behave in these rooms in a way imported palettes do not, and they sit naturally with original timber and tile.
Comfort in a house built before insulation
Bungalows of this age were built with no insulation, single glazing and a heating arrangement added long afterwards, which is why they can feel wonderful in spring and difficult in January and August. Improving that is largely invisible work — insulating where walls or ceilings are already open, draught-sealing sensitively so original windows keep working, adding secondary glazing where replacement would be a loss — and it changes how the house is lived in more than any decorative decision. Done with restraint it takes nothing away from the character of the interior, which is precisely the point: comfort should not cost the house its personality.
