Most of these houses have a rear porch, laundry room or breakfast nook that was tacked on and is now barely used. Absorbing it into the kitchen usually delivers the extra floor area without touching the street-facing architecture at all, which is both the cheapest and the most respectful route.
Matching millwork rather than mimicking it
A Craftsman house has a consistent language of casing, rail heights and timber proportion. New cabinetry that picks up those proportions reads as belonging; new cabinetry that copies period detailing literally usually reads as a costume. Getting that distinction right is the difference between a good and a merely expensive result.
What is behind a hundred-year-old wall
Early wiring, galvanised supply lines, lath and plaster and previous alterations made without drawings are all normal findings here. A budget for a bungalow kitchen should carry a real contingency, and a builder should expect to find something rather than hope not to.
A city that reviews with preservation in mind
Building and Safety sits inside the Planning & Community Preservation Department, and applications go through the city's Accela portal. That departmental arrangement is a fair description of how the town thinks: work that sits comfortably in an old neighbourhood is read sympathetically.
