The single defining change in these houses is removing the barrier between kitchen and living space. It is usually structural, it is usually worth it, and it is almost always the difference between a house that feels of its decade and one that feels current without pretending to be new.
Cabinetry that suits a mature house
A house with real 1970s character is poorly served by cabinetry chosen from a new-build catalogue. Proportion, door style and the way the run meets an existing beam or soffit are what decide whether the kitchen looks inserted or looks original, and those are drawing decisions, not showroom ones.
Plan check goes to the County, not a city counter
The City contracts building and safety to the County of Los Angeles, so applications run through the County's EPIC-LA system with the counter for this area in Calabasas. It is a different rhythm from a small city hall, and knowing its submittal expectations is half the schedule.
